Using your meter to find a leak
Your water meter plays a vital role in conserving water and identifying potential plumbing issues. By monitoring your water usage and checking your meter, you can detect leaks effectively.
To start, ensure all faucets are off, no toilets are flushed, and appliances like ice makers are inactive. Observe the meter's low-flow indicator, typically a black or red triangle; it should remain still. Movement might signal a leak.
Common leak sources include:
- Toilets: Inspect the flapper. If water level drops after shutting the supply, replace the flapper or adjust the float to maintain appropriate water levels.
- Water softeners: Post-regeneration, ensure no water runs to the drain. If it does, repairs are necessary.
- Faucets: Fix or replace any dripping ones.
- Furnace humidifiers: Confirm the float stops water at the correct level as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
For a comprehensive check, try an Overnight Leak Test:
- Record your meter reading after the day’s water usage is complete.
- Avoid water usage overnight, then recheck the meter in the morning.
- A changed reading indicates a leak.
If a leak is detected, repair it promptly to avoid high bills. Note that leak-related water usage isn’t eligible for credits.
Cross Connection/Backflow Protection
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has mandated in late 2020 that municipalities include residential home inspections as part of their Cross Connection Program.
Due to the volume of homes involved, the Charter Township of Union will be contracting with Hydro-Corp Inc. beginning in December, 2020 for Cross Connection inspections. You can visit the following Hydro-Corp to learn more.
